There\u2019s a new Vermont spelling bee champion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the word \u201cutilitarian,\u201d Riverside School student Phoenix Newell, 12, of Kirby, clinched the first place win at the Vermont State Scripps Spelling Bee<\/a> at Middlebury College on Thursday afternoon. Tatum Raphael, 13, of Vergennes, came in second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Newell placed third in last year\u2019s competition<\/a>, having been defeated by two-time champion Elise Cournoyer from Camels Hump Middle School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, Newell heads to the national spelling bee in May in Washington, D.C.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
