Photo by Glenn Russell\/VTDigger<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>BURLINGTON \u2014 With shovels in the ground and hard hats on, officials chucked soil, throwing up clouds of dust at a construction site off North Avenue on Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event celebrated the groundbreaking of 100 Cambrian Way. It means that these homes will give families the stability to raise their children here and know that this housing will still be affordable for their children and their grandchildren.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new building will be the third to offer affordable housing at the site. Ten apartments have been set aside for families with vouchers from the Burlington Housing Authority, which could help lift recipients out of homelessness.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trust and Evernorth completed the 72-unit Laurentide building there in 2019, and Cathedral Square\u2019s Juniper House with 70 apartments for adults 55 and older opened in 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A fourth building planned \u2014 Shale Beach Condominiums \u2014 will add 30 permanently affordable condos through the Champlain Housing Trust\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/vtdigger.org\/2022\/06\/26\/a-new-program-aims-to-help-bipoc-homebuyers-with-down-payments\/\">shared equity program<\/a>, offering homeownership at a fraction of current prices, Michael Monte, CEO of the housing trust, announced at the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese 40 apartments will help people feel safe and secure in a home,\u201d Monte said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2500\" height=\"1663\" data-attachment-id=\"629040\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/vtdigger.org\/affordable-housing-2-20250807\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/vtdigger.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/affordable-housing-2-20250807.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"2500,1663\" data-comments-opened=\"0\" data-image-meta='{\"aperture\":\"2.8\",\"credit\":\"Glenn Russell\",\"camera\":\"NIKON Z 6\",\"caption\":\"Construction of 40 affordable apartments underway at the Cambrian Way housing complex in Burlington on Thursday, August 7, 2025. He has heard from employers who fail to attract or retain talent because it is too expensive for people to rent or buy a home in Vermont, he said. A third of it came from federal and state tax credits through the Vermont Housing Finance Agency, $8.8 million came from state and federal funds committed by the Vermont Housing and Conservation Board, $3 million came from the City of Burlington, and $1 million came from a donor that wanted to help the homelessness situation in the city, according to the release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is designed by Duncan Wisniewski Architecture. Wright and Morrissey are the general contractors. Built in partnership between Downstreet Housing and Development and Evernorth, it is the first new affordable development built in Berlin in a decade, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mynbc5.com\/article\/officials-unveil-new-affordable-housing-in-washington-county\/65618819\">MyNBC5 reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the federal government pursues massive tax cuts, Vermont may receive more federal tax credits to support housing development, said Maura Collins, executive director of the Vermont Housing Finance Agency, which administers the federal tax credits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collins quoted a song from Hamilton which goes, \u201cWhat is a legacy?
