Vermont\u2019s forests historically had dense canopy cover, and fire naturally recycles nutrients, creates habitats and promotes regeneration. These forests are resilient and do not need logging to be \u201csafer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/johnmuirproject.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/JMP-fact-sheet-FOFA-Senate-bill-misinformation-30Apr25.pdf\">Fix Our Forests Act<\/a>\u201d would not protect communities or forests. Thinning and logging <a href=\"https:\/\/johnmuirproject.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/JMP-fact-sheet-thinning-and-fire-29Nov24.pdf\">leave flammable debris, open the canopy and fragment landscapes<\/a>, increasing fire spread. Focusing on forests where fire occurs naturally diverts attention from human-built areas, where wildfire truly threatens lives and property.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even <a href=\"https:\/\/johnmuirproject.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/JMP-fact-sheet-thinning-and-fire-29Nov24.pdf\">U.S. Forest Service scientists<\/a> note that thinning and post-fire logging can increase tree mortality, push flames faster toward homes and release more carbon than the fires themselves would.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wildfire danger is primarily tied to the human-built environment. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fema.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2020-07\/fema_mitsaves-factsheet_2018.pdf\">Federal Emergency Management Agency<\/a> and wildfire experts point to home hardening, defensible space and community preparedness as the most effective ways to protect lives and property.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vermont\u2019s recent fires \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcax.com\/2024\/12\/03\/vermont-endures-record-fall-wildfire-season\/\">82 in 2024<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/vtdigger.org\/2025\/08\/11\/vermont-reaches-very-high-fire-risk-amid-hot-dry-conditions\/\">45 in 2025<\/a>, nearly all human-caused \u2014 show the real threat comes from human activity and proximity to homes, not forest density. Policies should focus on strengthening communities rather than industrial logging of resilient forests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/119th-congress\/house-bill\/582\">H.R. 582<\/a>, the \u201cCommunity Protection and Wildfire Resilience Act\u201d introduced by Rep. Jared Huffman, D-Calif., offers a more effective approach. It helps communities develop resilience plans emphasizing home hardening, defensible space and preparedness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vermonters deserve solutions grounded in science, not legislation that industrializes forests. The \u201cFix Our Forests Act\u201d diverts resources, weakens protections and undermines ecosystem resilience.
